Rotary Saw and Rotary Tool

There are so many power tools out there and it can be quite confusing to choose one because many of them look useful yet, do consider what your typical tasks or job ask because chances are we can work on some of them with just the available manual tools. For most people a drill or driver will be the very basic tool to have around but, for people who will often cut materials like wood or metal, we will also need something to help with the process.

You can get a construction site table saw for handling a wide or long sheet of panel while for something more detailed we may need a circular saw instead. Both are very useful and convenient yet they are made for different types of jobs. For those who are more on the detailing, we will need something even smaller such as rotary saw and rotary tools which are very similar in functionalities and can be used to call the same type of power tool as well.

You will notice that a rotary saw is in general bigger or bulkier than a rotary tool which mostly can be held stable and operated with one hand. What makes it more confusing is that rotary saw is used to call both the one with a round saw blade and the other one that looks like a rotary tool with a drill bit attached on its chuck. What we are talking about here is the latter and while it looks like a drill in a glance, this tool is used just like rotary tools.

Their main function is to cut a pattern, mostly on a sheet of material like wood plank or plastic. What makes them different from typical rotary tools is that they will be slightly bulkier in form factor and usually you will see one with an attachment on top that makes sure the depth of the blade will be uniform. Rotary tools on the other hand is more of a freestyle in application but it is also required for versatility.

In some types of task we can use any of the two such as cutting a thin sheet of material but the versatility of rotary tools is often much wider because its functionality is based on the attachment we put on the collet. On the other hand, for a heavy duty task, depending on the power most of them are only useful for the small to medium jobs and thus, depending on the application, we may be able to rely on just one tool.

About DeWalt DW660 and Dremel

One of the advantages of rotary saw and rotary tools is their ease of use so everyone can get familiar with how to work with the equipment in no time. Many power tools companies are also offering the options or even both in the same collection. We do think it is wise to select based on your application while considering what we may need in the near future then match it with the product. Every option must have the pros and cons that we want to notice first.

When it comes to power tools, there are plenty of famous brands coming up in our mind and one of them is DeWalt. This company comes with more than plenty of power tools to rely on and while price wise they are also among the more expensive, we do love their performance and lasting ability, such as the popular cordless drills like DeWalt XR Vs MAX. For the rotary tools specifically, Dremel is probably much more popular however since the founder is also the one who invented the power tool.

Just like most companies, you can find plenty of models and variants so it can be confusing. The DeWalt DW660 and Dremel popular power tools will be useful for a wide range of users but you can only use one depending on what type of tasks to work with. The DW660 for example is a rotary saw and while it looks like a drill, this tool is used to cut a sheet of material, especially when you need to trace the pattern directly.

For the comparison we will be choosing Dremel 4000 which is probably one of the most famous models from their collection for the price point as well as the abilities. In comparison, they are quite different and in short you can select based on what materials or job the tool will be working on. Between DeWalt DW660 and Dremel, the latter will be more versatile but the former will be more powerful if you are cutting thick or mostly doing cutting with them.

DeWalt DW660 and Dremel Design

While overall the DW660 is slightly larger, it is still small enough to be operated with only one hand. The traditional DeWalt look is still very prominent here with the yellow and black fashion option. The main housing itself is already 3.2 lbs. and it is corded so we have to be close to the power source. It is more of a heavy duty construction tool than something we often use at home such as crafting. However, the Dremel 4000 we have here is also corded.

In comparison, the tool only is much lighter for Dremel 4000 is only about 1 lbs. making it perfect for a lighter application such as sanding and cutting small or more delicate sheets of material. It is also easy to maneuver with only one hand when you need to carve into something. Both tools will come with some bits but you will get many more in the Dremel kit.

DeWalt DW660 and Dremel Motor

Now for the most important part, both DeWalt DW660 and Dremel are similar but quite different. When looking for a power tool, what you may want to consider next is the amount of power they can achieve depending on what material or job you will be working on. For the DW660, this is a cutting tool meant for heavy duty applications but also versatile. It comes with a 5 Amp motor to power the tool while for Dremel 4000 we have today it comes with a 1.6 Amp motor.

Side by side you can feel how powerful DW660 is so it is probably not ideal for working on smaller or delicate items while if you want to cut a durable or thicker material, this will be very useful to make sure it is done fast and effectively. The Dremel maximum speed is 35,000 RPM however while the DW660 is slightly less at 30,000 RPM.

DeWalt DW660 and Dremel Versatility

What makes the DeWalt DW660 and Dremel very useful is actually the type of attachment or bits that you can use with the tools. DW660 is not a crafting tool and mostly used as just saw but, we can improve the versatility by attaching different bits here, as long as it matches with the collet which is either 1/8-inch or ¼-inch. It seems that they don’t provide other than standard bits but you can always resource to another brand or manufacturer.

As for the Dremel 4000, this tool is already coming with different kits in which most of them contain lots of bits. This is a collection of various bits for cutting, sanding, carving, drilling, etc. This rotary tool comes with 1/8-inch collet already attached so depending on the size, we may be able to use the same kits for DW660 too; it is not impossible to use DW660 as your rotary tool.

DeWalt DW660 and Dremel Experience

Lastly for the experience, using DeWalt DW660 and Dremel are a breeze. They are very similar to regular drills but much more versatile and compact. You don’t need much time to change the bits as well so overall we can work quickly. If you need more power or working on something sturdier, we do think the DeWalt is not only faster but also more reassuring. The issue is probably the bit itself because they are prone to break, especially when used with heavy duty tools like DW660.

DeWalt DW660 Vs Dremel

Both DeWalt DW660 and Dremel are equally reliable but probably not for the same type of application. DW660 is more of a cut out tool and many people are using it for cutting drywall as it is a heavy-duty tool with plenty of power. Dremel’s rotary tools are usually for delicate items or detailed work because they are more popular for crafting and similar applications; thus, the motor is also not as powerful. However, we can convert DW660 into a rotary tool with the compatible bits.

- DEWALT rotary tool features tool-free bit change for fast and easy bit changing without a wrench
- Turn-on/Bump-off switch of DEWALT cut out tool allows user to easily shut tool off
- 5.0 amp, 30,000 rpm motor provides more cutting power
- Slim body design and ergonomic for less fatigue over prolonged use
- Versatile rotary tool kit: Includes 4000 corded rotary tool, 2 attachments, 30 high-quality Dremel accessories, plastic storage case, and accessory case
- High performance motor – Provides maximum power and performance at all speeds
- Variable speed (5,000 – 35,000 RPM) and electronic feedback circuitry for consistent performance even in the most demanding applications
- Innovated air flow system- Ventilation mechanism helps prevent heat build-up for smoother, cooler, and quieter operation

Conclusion

The choice is all yours since there is no bad option here but, we will recommend DW660 if you will be working on something that is more durable and as long as the weight is not an issue but for typical crafting, the Dremel collection such as this 4000 model will be more ideal.
