There is only so much our manual saw can handle and for more serious jobs it will be effective to leave the task for an electrically powered table saw. They are like the impact driver to your manual screwdriver so we don’t have to exert manual effort to move the saw back and forth to cut and shape the wood. Since most home improvement or DIY projects will have to use wood as the main material, it is just convenient to have a table saw at home or at your job site.Read also: Dewalt Atomic vs Milwaukee M12.
There are some basics to know about this powerful machine however that can help you get used to the mechanism in no time. A table saw will have a table-like surface and typically be mounted on a surface like platform or table where the base can sit and stabilize the machine. You can do almost all types of regular cuts with them from long, straight, rip cuts to repeated cross cuts across the woodgrain more effectively. You can also make miter and bevel cuts or angled cuts.
- In a table saw you will see a rip fence and this is the bar located at the side of the table which functions as a guide to the piece of wood we are working on. It is not in a fixed position and depending on the machine they can have various distances from the circular saw itself.
- There is something called a miter gauge and this is used to move the workpiece past the blade for making cuts at specific angles; also adjustable.
- The bevel system itself is a mechanism that allows users to tilt the blade to make bevel cuts so in table saw the blade is not always straight at 90 degree but based on the mechanism usually can be adjusted from and up to a certain degree.
- You will see a riving knife on the blade housing and it is used to prevent the work piece from pinching the blade or reducing the risk of the boards kicking back towards the user; it is a safety system.
- In many table saws you can find anti-kickback pawls and these are metal arms on the blade housing with teeth which function to grab a wood or piece of material from hitting the users when it gets kicked back by the mechanism.
- Lastly, the housing of the blade itself called blade guard is a pivoting shield that protects users from small particles emitted by the material, along with kickback and accidental contact with the sharp blade.

About DEWALT DWE7485 and DWE7480
There are plenty to know about in a table saw and a good power tool will have enough power to work with the projects, easy to use, as well as coming with necessary safety features to protect the users. Since saws are a very familiar tool and used in many situations or types of works, we can find plenty of options out there from varying brands with their own machines and different specs or power. We do suggest sticking with your favorite brand if you have one for convenience.
DEWALT is one of the most popular options when people are going to buy a new power tool because they are reputable for the good quality products and while the products tend to be on the more expensive side, they can last for quite a long time. Power wise they have a wide range of practical use so it is best to match the unit with your type of application or budget such as whether it is for professional work load or for personal use.
Some of the most affordable options from the brand and those ideal for home improvement or light to medium task are the DEWALT DWE7485 and DWE7480. Both of them are currently available for less than $400 per unit and as the names suggest, they are very close brothers with very similar capabilities but, now the latter or DWE7480 is no longer manufactured by the company so it is probably difficult to find the unit. In comparison, the DWE7485 is a higher option and comes with some improvements as well.
In general the DWE7485 is a more capable machine such as with a speed bumped up to increase the speed of your project as well as making the ripping capacity even more versatile for a wider type of jobs. The latter is by no means a bad table saw but it is an old system that needs to be upgraded so in short if you are able to reason with the price point, we do highly recommend choosing the DWE7485.
DEWALT DWE7485 and DWE7480 Design
These table saws are very compact and side by side, they are about the same or even identical to each other. The housing is about 26.6 inches by 14 inches by 27 inches, making them should be able to fit in almost any setting and with an approximate weight of 46 lbs. These saws are compact and transport easily with two people holding each side of the unit or pushed when mounted on a platform with wheels. The lower feet frame of these tools are also covered with thick rubber material to prevent shakiness.
What we like better in DWE7485 is the excess feet which work as a handle as well when moving the unit in which with the latter we have to hold the vertical or horizontal steel frame; it gives versatility when transporting them. They have the same component and mechanism with the same 15 AMP motor and very sturdy built quality. Unfortunately they are not shipped with the stand yet so we have to buy it separately.
DEWALT DWE7485 and DWE7480 Specs
Now for the most important part, let’s see what DEWALT DWE7485 and DWE7480 can offer starting from their basic specs first to conclude what has been improved on the higher machine. The DWE7480 is a capable machine that uses a 15AMP motor and has a no-load speed at 4800 RPM which should be fast enough to supply the job with a reliable machine. On this side the DWE7485 is improved to 5800RPM making the saw faster while keeping the ease of use.
But, if you go with the DWE7480, this model has a larger 10-inch blade instead of the newer and smaller 8 ¼-inch variant. One of the reasons why smaller blades are often used recently is because they are cutting off the kickback force from the machine and even with a 10-inch size, as long as the arbor hole is the same we should be able to install smaller blades.
DEWALT DWE7485 and DWE7480 Capacity
However, this is not the only differences between DEWALT DWE7485 and DWE7480 because with the new system, now the machine can only provide a depth of cut at 2 9/16 inch instead of 3 1/8-inch so it may affects what type of cut and the thickness of material you are going to work with. If the smaller blade is enough for your application then we do think it won’t be a problem but for some people it is probably more crucial.
The arbor size of these saws are the same but none of them are compatible with dado stack. We have heard some people are capable of installing dado blades on these machines but the company is stating that they are not designed to work with the blade due to the arbor on the motor being too short. As for the maximum rip capacity, you can cut the same width with the two at 24-inch on the right and 12-inch on the left side.
DEWALT DWE7485 and DWE7480 Performance
Lastly on the performance, the DEWALT DWE7485 and DWE7480 are working really well however. We don’t have any problem such as when adjusting the fence since the mechanism is very straightforward; what you need to do is unclamped the lock and move it to desired position then lock it again. The higher speed of DWE7485 translates into faster and sleeker movement through the blade. The stock blade is not bad either but probably worth investing in to improve the overall performance.
Dewalt DWE7485 vs DWE7480
Both of DEWALT DWE7485 and DWE7480 are good alternatives to a work site table saw and being small surely we can take them anywhere you need to go. They are not the most powerful table saws in the market but should be enough to handle typical light to medium jobs. The DWE7485 is faster but it uses a smaller blade so the cutting depth is shorter as well yet for the left and right capacity, the two are almost identical.
You can go amazing with any of them based on the application but the DWE7480 has been discontinued so it is probably difficult to find one and the new design as well as faster speed load with the DWE7485 is very attractive to rely on.
