Cordless Drills

Tools are made to help humans complete their tasks and it is in general very useful from those we have to use everyday to those we only need from time to time. Depending on your line of work, sometimes we are more familiar with certain types of tools compared to the rest. If you think of tools as something that help humans, our computers and smartphones are tools too in terms of how they assist our everyday tasks. But, today we are talking about power tools.

They were mostly manual in the past but with the improvement in technology they are now running on electricity which eliminates the need to apply manual force and among the typical options, cordless drill is probably the most common to go for. As the name suggests they are the cordless version or battery powered power drill and you will need them for lots of applications such as building the modern furniture, remodeling the kitchen, building the deck,  making a shed, etc.

In modern days cordless drills are mostly using Lithium-ion batteries which are more effective and can provide long lasting power into your tools. Because of the application, this type of battery is also better because they tend to be lighter to improve handling comfort. Due to the improvement in technology and how things like batteries are made to be more reliable, even though your older battery is the same Li-ion, chances are they don’t hold as much power compared to modern batteries.

Power tools are also improved a lot on the mechanism or motor to be exact because so many of newer releases are already moving into the brushless variety. In the past, they were more popular among contractor-oriented brands but nowadays you can find them from almost any consumer brands that you can easily find on the store, including those that are more affordable. As opposed to the brushed motors, brushless is running more effectively depending on what the drill is currently used for.

Not only cordless drills, the same improvement is also seen on impact drivers. Yes this power tool can sometimes be mistaken as cordless drill but they are very easy to set apart because the mechanism and the design of the tool itself is also different. Both can be used for drilling and for driving screws yet for the more taxing materials, it is wise to use the impact driver for it is the one designed for the type of application. Usually you can find a set of one cordless drill and impact driver kit from various brands.

About DeWalt XR and MAX

Most brands carry lots of similar power tools in the collection. Sometimes they are only different because the kit is made of different tools and this is what makes the shopping process can be quite confusing. We do think sticking to your previous power tool brand is convenient because we can still use the battery or charger in case they are still compatible but if you are buying just one item, it is wise to know at least what they can offer.

You can also shop based on which seems to fit in the budget or the brand that seems to have great reputation such as DeWalt. This brand is extremely famous and they are known to offer great quality products as well so you should be able to find the collection almost everywhere. They tend to be a bit more expensive however, compared to similar brands like Milwaukee but performance wise we do like how reliable their power tools are.

Our only complaint is that there are so many variants coming from their collection which makes it confusing to choose one because lots are also very similar in terms of specs and abilities. However, usually, you see them being separated by line which is used to signify the technology behind the product such as DeWalt XR and MAX that cover a wide range of power tools, including the drill and impact driver. These variants are actually very similar but not the same.

For the example we are going to use the cordless drill power tools and the specific models are DCD791 and DCD771 from the lines respectively. These cordless drills can be found as a single item or in a kit depending on which seems to fit you best. In comparison, they are very similar but the MAX line was first introduced as the continuation of the 18V while the XR line is used to call the power tools that come with enhanced components, especially the motor.

DeWalt XR and MAX Design

Before getting into the tools, let’s see what the DeWalt XR and MAX are looking like from the outside. Basically they are looking like any cordless drills out there but they are not identical at all and as an XR variant, you can see the label printed near the chuck as well. In general the cordless drill specific DCD791 model is shorter from back to front which makes it more convenient for when you have to work in a narrow space.

The rest of the design and control scheme is pretty much the same because as you can see, there is a speed switch at the top and one trigger to adjust the speed of your drill. There is a reverse button as well near the trigger and just like most drills the handle is shaped to provide the proper space for the hand to grip. They are also equally texturized to improve the handling while the overall build quality itself is also impressive. Read also: Craftsman V20 Vs DeWalt 20V here.

DeWalt XR and MAX Motor

Next for the most important part, let’s see what the DeWalt XR and MAX can offer starting from the motor and as it has been mentioned above, what set the lines the most is the improvement in the motor and this is because the XR is already using a brushless motor. This is not a new technology but as opposed to the more traditional brushed motors the XR is overall smarter and this is because they can work based on the power needed by your material.

Brushed motors will perform at the same capacity no matter what you are dealing with while brushed motors can adjust the power to match the requirement of your material so they will run more effectively and this is why they can preserve battery longer too. Overall the brushless motors will make your tool long lasting and run cooler.

DeWalt XR and MAX Power

Moving further, the DeWalt XR and MAX are also not the same based on the control but this varies among the models so do note that this comparison is specific for DCD791 and DCD771. Under no load, the speed rating of DeWalt XR is from 0-600 or 0-20,000 RPM while the MAX drill is slightly slower at 0-450 or 0-1,800 RPM. They are only offering two different speed adjustments but the trigger itself is already variable, along with the same clutch setting, and ½-inch chuck size.

As for the power rating they are different at 460 UWO and 300 UWO which is kind of similar to torque used by other companies. This is meant to measure the unit watts out of the power output that can be delivered by the drill or the ability to do the work based on the function of torque and speed. Torque itself is only measuring the ability to produce turning force so in general UWO should be more accurate when it comes to telling you the more complete ability.

DeWalt XR and MAX Performance

Lastly, we are going to talk about the performance of DeWalt XR and MAX because this is the most important part. They are actually very reliable and ideal for the type of application in home use including from light to medium task. The difference is that XR feels lighter on the hand and it is also slightly faster, probably because the tool can produce more power, it is more effective across applications. However, the MAX series drill is also working really well so it is still a great option.

Both DeWalt XR and MAX are good options and while it can be confusing because DeWalt has so many variants from different lines, they are not exactly the same to each other. The differences are because the XR is a brushless model which means the motor is more efficient and also more durable if you will be using the tool for a long time. For the specific model, DCD791 is coming with faster speed, higher power, as well as shorter dimensions.

- Brushless motor of cordless drill combo kit delivers up to 57% more runtime over brushed
- XR Lithium Ion batteries with fuel gauge in cordless tools combo kit provide 33% more capacity over standard packs

- DCF887 20V max 1/4-inch Impact Driver has a compact (5.3-inch front to back) design to fit into tight areas
- Dewalt drill has compact and lightweight design that fits into tight areas
- High performance motor of the power drill delivers 300 unit watts out (UWO) of power ability completing a wide range of applications
- High speed transmission of Dewalt 20V drill delivers 2 speeds (0-450 & 1,500 rpm) for a range of fastening and drilling applications

There is no bad option here based on which seems to match well with your application but in comparison DeWalt XR is the more reliable and efficient power tool especially when it comes to the motor so it may improve your productivity and experience.
